Hovering at Ridgefield

A second image from yesterday’s Loggerhead Shrike shoot at Ridgefield NWR, April 26, 2017.  This bird was very good about staying low when it left its perch to hover.  Most of the time it would perch on teasel but sometimes it would fly to the ground.  I spent over ten m ... Continue Reading

The Impaler

A surprise sighting for me today (April 26, 2017) of this relatively rare visitor to the Ridgefield NWR.  This is a first sighting for me in 10 years of shooting birds at the Ridgefield refuge.  The swallows in the area did not like this fellow flying and hovering around as ... Continue Reading

Triple Harrier Tuesday

This is a March 1, 2017 sequence of three images depicting a Northern Harrier finishing off a garter snake, then lifting off to find its next meal.  Taken at the Ridgefield NWR in southwest Washington state. [Because my website is old and inflexible, I have positioned the 3 imag ... Continue Reading

Spring in black, red, and green

On April 4, 2017, I was driving slowly through the Ash tree forest of the Ridgefield NWR and observed this Spotted Towhee foraging on the ground.  I kept my eye on him as he jumped up on this perch, giving the shot a nice Spring-like ambience. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1250, f4, ISO ... Continue Reading

Four-legged Predator

A rare (for me) chance encounter with a Weasel at the Ridgefield NWR, April 11, 2017.  As I was driving the gravel auto tour route at the refuge, this small animal darts across the road in front of me from left to right, with its tail straight up in the air.  I do my best to ke ... Wing and foot stretch

This almost grown Bald Eagle was perched on a branch in the Ash Tree forest of the Ridgefield NWR, April 4, 2017.  Here the bird is stretching its wing and foot.  It’s within a year of becoming a fully matured Bald Eagle.  I love seeing these birds make it to adults! Can ... Continue Reading
