Northern Flicker

Northern Flicker

I was at Mt. Tabor Park in Portland, Oregon, on June 24, 2011, and noticed this Northern Flicker on the ground at the curb of the road.  It let me drive within a few feet of it without it flying.  Then, a jogger came down the hill by my truck, flushing the bird.  It flew to this mossy branch in the woods just outside my passenger’s side window.  Using the Better Beamer on my flash, I was able to light up the otherwise shady darkness of the woods.  Taken with a Canon 7D, 1/500, f5.6, ISO800, Canon 400mm f5.6L lens.
