Summer Waxwing

Summer Waxwing

This is a Cedar Waxwing perched just outside the Kiwa trail entrance at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, taken early August 2010.  It is one of the first images taken with my then new Canon 400mm f5.6L lens.  I was on foot for this one and was using my monopod and flash.  Flash power was intentionally subdued to act as fill flash (-2/3 stop flash EV).  The bird was up in a tree about 12 feet and I wasn’t expecting it to be a keeper since it was in a partially shaded area.  I think the flash provided some even lighting on the bird and the background didn’t turn out too bad.  1/250, f7.1, 400mm, ISO500, flash -2/3, EOS 40D.
