Virginia Rail

Virginia Rail

In June 2010, I was walking the road at the Ridgefield NWR and spotted a pair of Virginia Rails and one chick as they were crossing a small opening in the bushes near the edge of the road.  This is a photo of one of the mature birds.  I took this handheld with a Canon 40D, 1/400, f6.3, ISO400, 400mm, Canon 100-400mm L lens.  There are a few other shots in the comments section of the post on Flickr at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dsdavenport/4729922780/, including a shot of the chick.  These birds don’t like to come out in the open, and when they do, they usually walk or run quickly to cover in thick grass or other foliage.
