Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

I have wanted to get a decent shot of my nemesis, the Pileated Woodpecker, since I began bird photography 6 1/2 years ago!  Well, today at Ridgefield NWR, this fellow was on a snag about 20 feet away.  He was really ‘doing a number’ on the tree with his powerful bill as you can see on the lower left.  Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America, measuring up to 18 inches long.  This shot has not been cropped except for some white sky on the left and right.  I’ll post more shots of him in an upcoming blog post.  Canon 5D Mark III, 1/4000, f6.3, ISO 2500, Canon 400mm f5.6L lens.
