One minute later…

This is the Great Blue Heron from a few posts ago, about one minute after the initial spearing of the frog.  Thirty seconds after this shot the frog disappeared.  Taken at the Ridgefield NWR March 23, 2017. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1600, f4, ISO 320, 500mm, 10:59 a.m. Continue Reading

Not Much Left

A very nice day weather-wise at the Ridgefield NWR, March 10, 2017.  Most eagles wouldn’t come close but there was a mature and immature Bald Eagle hanging out in the Ash tree forest.  Here, the mature bird brought its catch to one of the Ash trees and was finishing it of ... Continue Reading

Duck for Lunch

This Bald Eagle circled a small tree and finally made its dive in the marshy waters, easily snatching a duck.  The eagle then checks its catch as it ascends from the dive and flies over to a nearby tree to enjoy the fruits of its labor. LARGEVIEW! Canon 7D Mark II, 1/2500. f4, I ... Continue Reading

One of my favorite Harrier shots

I’m again reaching back into my archives, this time with one of my favorite Northern Harrier action shots, taken Jan. 11, 2012, at the Ridgefield NWR.  I recall watching this bird landing on the ground and when I hit the shutter as it took off, providing a good look at its ... Continue Reading

Snipe for Lunch

I didn’t realize this Northern Harrier had captured a Wilson’s Snipe until I got home and viewed the shot on the ‘big’ screen.  Taken April 13, 2016, at the Ridgfield NWR.  Their typical prey are mice and voles. LARGEVIEW! Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1250, f4, I ... Continue Reading

Transferring the Goods

A shot from January 15, 2016, at the Ridgefield NWR.  The immature Bald Eagle is transferring the catch from its talons to its bill while in flight.  Thanks for viewing! LARGEVIEW! Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1250, f4, ISO 4000, 500mm, 9:22 a.m. Continue Reading

Deadly Strike

Reviewing my Feb. 9, 2016, shots I recall my close encounter with this Great Blue Heron which had just caught brunch.  In this case, the bird’s lightning fast bill pierced the skin of the hapless prey.  There was no resistance by the snake as the heron consumed its catch. ... Continue Reading

“I got one!”

A look back to Sep. 2, 2014 at Ridgefield NWR where an immature American Bittern catches a tadpole/frog with a back light.  The young bird is out in the open in a puddle of water probably not realizing how vulnerable it might be to large raptors.  None of that hunting near tall ... Continue Reading
