Chillin’ between hunting flights

This is the same American Kestrel that I posted a hover shot of the other day.  Here the bird is taking a rest before heading out to do more hunting. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1250, f4, ISO 640, 500mm, 6:46 p.m. Continue Reading

Hovering in Summer

Here’s another shot of an airborne bird taken on my Aug. 7, 2017, visit to the Ridgefield NWR.  This American Kestrel is hovering over the newly mown fields of the refuge in early evening sun looking for just about anything that moves. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1250, f4, ISO 640 ... Continue Reading

Sunset Flyer

It was a smoky day at the Ridgefield NWR, August 7, 2017.  We’ve had a stretch of heat here in the Pacific Northwest that has trapped the smoke from wildfires burning as far north as British Columbia.  The background of today’s Great Blue Heron shot would have norma ... Continue Reading

Pied-billed Grebe at Low Sun

Another image from my July 26, 2017, visit to the Ridgefield NWR — a Pied-billed Grebe does a wing flap near sunset at the south end of Rest Lake. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1250, f4, ISO 400, 500mm, 7:47 p.m. Continue Reading

Immature Red-tail in flight

There’s not nearly the number of raptors flying around at the Ridgefield NWR in summer as in the winter time, so it was fun to see this juvenile Red-tailed Hawk fly directly over me on July 26, 2017. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/2000, f4, ISO 320, 500mm, 3:55 p.m. Continue Reading

King of the Haystack

Many of the grassy fields at the Ridgefield NWR are cut down and baled.  On July 26, 2017, I came across this male American Kestrel perched on the corner of one of the top bales which were stacked high.  When it flew off, it joined another kestrel hunting the freshly mowed land ... Turkey Vulture Flight Shot

I paid a visit to the Ridgefield NWR, July 26, 2017, and spotted quite a few Turkey Vultures doing their soaring activities.  A few times they got fairly close to me.  This is the best shot from the bunch. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/2000, f4, ISO 320, 500mm, 4:05 p.m. Continue Reading

Balancing Bird

A Bald Eagle does a wing stretch using one leg to balance on the branch.  Taken at the Ridgefield NWR, July 14, 2017, with a 2x converter attached to my 500mm lens, which was attached to a 1.6x crop camera body, making the effective focal length 1600mm. Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1600, ... Continue Reading
