Lady Bufflehead at the Golden Hour

January 11, 2019, at sunset.  A lone Bufflehead seemed to be content just floating around on the golden waters at the Ridgefield NWR. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1250, f4, ISO 4000, 500mm, 5:07 p.m. Continue Reading

Sedge of Cranes

In my truck between markers 11 & 12 on Jan. 11, 2019, at the Ridgefield NWR.  Suddenly there was noise and I looked up to see about 60 Sandhill Cranes in formation–by far the largest number of flying cranes I’ve seen at the River S Unit.  The photo shows only ab ... Continue Reading

RTH Launch

This Red-tailed Hawk allowed cars to drive by it within 8 feet as it perched on the post.  I drove about 100 feet past the post and captured the bird as it launched.  The light behind the bird is a vehicle coming down the road.  Taken at the Ridgefield NWR on January 11, 2019. ... Continue Reading

Falcon

Another shot from my Dec. 7, 2018, trip to the Ridgefield NWR.  This Peregrine Falcon stayed on this branch for the longest time.  Only bad part was the distance from the bird–about 400 feet.  Picture is not for zooming in. 🙂 Canon 7D Mark II, 1/1250, f4, ISO 640, 500 ... Continue Reading

Sapsucker too close

I visited the Ridgefield NWR on Dec. 8, 2018 and was stopped on the road, taking shots of chickadees in trees outside the driver’s-side window, when a pair of Red-breasted Sapsuckers landed on the trunk of one of the trees.  Unfortunately, the birds were “too close&# ... Continue Reading

Pretty Launch

This Northern Harrier likes to take a break from hunting by resting on two posts that encompass Rest Lake at the Ridgefield NWR.  Here she launches from the post located a few hundred yards east of marker 11, across the water on the north side of the road.  Captured November 13 ... Ballet, anyone?

November 13, 2018, at the Ridgefield NWR.  An immature Red-tailed Hawk launches from the top of a tree but looks like it’s dancing. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1250, f4, ISO 1250, 500mm, 2:22 p.m. Continue Reading
