I spent from sun up to sundown at the Ridgefield NWR Monday, Nov. 10, 2014. As the afternoon wore on I put the Canon 2x extender on the 500 (1000mm) and tried some flight shots of ducks and harriers. All the flight shots were laughable except for one. While it isn’t perfectly focused, I was pretty happy with the results, especially for being handheld out my truck window. Putting the Canon 2x III on the 500 II can yield razor sharp results in more static situations and, when the shot is executed correctly. It certainly isn’t the set up to use for birds in flight–unless you’re just having some fun like I was. My odds of getting sharp shots of moving subjects with this set up go way down compared to using the lens bare or with the 1.4x. The sun was heading down and I liked the light on this pretty lady.
