About a half dozen Turkey Vultures called the Ridgefield NWR home today, July 10, 2015. At times I observed them all perched in one tree just taking it easy. Other times, they’d be soaring above the refuge using their acute senses to find food. I spotted this lone bird on what was, prior to last winter, one of my favorite eagle perches. Before strong winter winds snapped it in half, it was about 80 feet tall. Now it’s about 40 feet. The perch is great because the light is excellent throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. The most interesting activity this vulture did while I was watching was to preen and fluff up its feathers. I picked the image for its fluffy feathers and also for the good look at the bird’s head. This perch tree is about 100 feet from my position on the road.
