The mature Bald Eagle actually knocked the younger one off the perch as they clutched talons. There are more shots from this encounter in my Feb. 1, 2011, blog posting. Taken at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Feb. 1, 2011, with Canon 7D, f5.6, 1/2500, ISO400, Canon 400mm f5.6L lens.
This shot won 3rd place in the 2011 Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge photo contest.
In April 2012, the shot also won first place in the Your Best Shot 2011 photo contest sponsored by AdoramaPix.com. The image was chosen out of over 2,200 entries and I took home a Canon 7D camera as grand prize. The field of entries was narrowed down to the top 12, then a panel of judges picked the winner. This was a very exciting win for me! AdoramaPix placed a write up on their blog here.
The shot was also featured as Pro Photo Supply’s banner image on their Facebook page from March 21 to at least April 24, 2012.
This pic is freaking AMAZING!!! I would have been so excited that I probably wouldn’t have been able to hold the camera still! LOL!! Way to go, Papa!
Thanks Kimi! The camera was setting on the new bean bag you gave me for Christmas, which is really working out nicely! I actually had little time to get nervous as I could not see what was coming. But the younger bird gave it away by flapping his wings and spinning around just seconds before the other bird came in from the left. At that point, it was over in a second. I might have gotten more shots if trees hadn’t obstructed my view–the eagles were moving from left to right as they clutched talons and quickly moved behind trees. Glad you liked the shot Kimi Ann!
What a capture! I can see why you love what you do!! My tummy did a flip-flop just seeing the photo!! Congrats!
It’s a nice feeling to ‘hear’ a person say that a photo of mine has brought joy or excitement to them. What a nice compliment, Christine. I’m fortunate to have you as a “fan.” Thanks!
