August 23, 2013, at the Ridgefield NWR, a Great Blue Heron vocalizes as it deploys its nictitating membrane over its eyes. I decided to leave the membrane-covered eye intact to show the bird’s natural actions while it was vocalizing. Some bird photographers feel that if the eye is diffused like this, it ruins the shot. I could have easily placed a normal eye from another frame over the original in Photoshop to make the eye stand out. I chose to display the bird as I saw it when the shutter was pressed. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/500, f5.6, ISO 1250, 700 mm (500 +1.4x).
