The Wood Duck is arguably one of the most colorful birds in North America. I took this photo in April 2010 at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Shooting from my truck, I was stopped about midway between posts #9 and #10. The duck saw me at first and hid behind some grass on the far side of the water–probably a good 50 feet away. After waiting a while, he finally emerged from behind the grass giving me a decent look at him. Taken with a Canon 40D, 1/1000, f6.3, 400mm, ISO400, Canon 100-400 f5.6L lens.
