I almost forgot about this shot of a Virginia Rail at the Ridgefield NWR from back on June 26, 2014. Certainly not the most picturesque background but – the rail’s favorite environment – long grass and water. Sometimes these birds will surprise you and come out in the open for a fleeting second, which is about all the time I had here to take the shot. It was overcast and dark, requiring a high ISO and slow shutter speed.
