I came across this Red-tailed Hawk at the Ridgefield NWR, on Sep. 26, 2014, chomping on a mouse it had caught. I would normally show a shot of the bird with the mouse hanging down from its mouth but this time I thought I’d post an odd shot where the bird has its nictitating membrane deployed on one eye but not the other. I don’t know if this is common or not where the membrane works independently on each eye, but this bird reminds me a little of Captain Hook, the pirate.
