  1. Do you follow specific species throughout the year? Here in Missouri, I have seen many red tailed hawks and bald eagles lately. I am considering developing walking paths and field diaries so that I am more likely to be in the right place at the right time for photo opportunities.

    1. Hi, John. Thanks for the question. I’d have to say ‘no.’ I guess I’ve done this long enough to know when to expect certain species to show up, and where the chances will be highest, but I’ve also found that it’s impossible to predict with great success. Back in my early days of shooting at my ‘home’ refuge (2008), there was a winter when Rough-legged Hawks were plentiful and I’d almost always see them (some very close up) during the winter months. While there are still some spottings of these hawks at the refuge, it has never been anything like that one year. On the other hand, the more common Red-tailed Hawk always shows up like clock-work.

John, I think your idea of developing walking paths and field diaries is a good one. I think that overall, birds are creatures of habit, and keeping records of where and when you see certain species, in many instances, could very well increase your chances of photo opportunities. The closest I’ve come to doing what you are considering is this website, which isn’t nearly as useful of a format as you will likely come up with.

Overall, I do my shoots with no particular species in mind but just take what comes along. I will listen to other folks who have seen certain species in a particular location, which has panned out at times.
