This is probably the most surprising image I have taken in my almost 11-year run as a bird photographer. Dec. 23, 2009, at the Ridgefield NWR, I remember it clearly. I had only been shooting birds for a year or so and was excited to see this Downy Woodpecker just outside my truck window on the ground. The bird would fly from the ground, back and forth to a tree trunk about 8 feet away. I took lots of pictures never noticing until getting home and viewing the images on my monitor that there was a tree frog on the back of this bird. I posted a series of shots of this bird on the web prior to even having this website and it got a lot of attention.
