Gettin’ out of Dodge

Feb. 2, 2020, at the Ridgefield NWR, came upon this coyote several hundred feet out in a field.  A seemingly small and scruffy coyote, it looked at me (sitting in my truck) and took off running.  It’s always fun to see these critters.  A lot more skittish now, coyotes wo ... Continue Reading

Over The Shoulder

Most of the day at the refuge, Nov. 16, 2019, was dark from heavy overcast, and a little rain.  But this American Kestrel gave me an over the shoulder pose while perched on a tree over-hanging the road. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1600, f4, ISO 500, 500mm, 2:15 p.m. Continue Reading

RTH on a Fall Day

Nov. 2, 2019, was my first wildlife photo outing in almost 8 months.  It was good to get out again at the Ridgefield NWR.  I thought I’d make my first post from today’s shoot the obligatory hawk on a sign shot. This Juvie Red-tailed Hawk was busy munching on somethi ... Continue Reading

Two Greats in Sync

Back for an encore, this shot was taken about 5 years ago at the Ridgefield NWR. I noticed the Great Egret and the Great Blue Heron way out in the field to my left (400 feet, after checking Google Earth). After taking some shots I realized that the egret was on a branch further b ... Continue Reading

White-faced Ibis

This is a photo I shot from about 5 years ago.  My one and only spotting of a White-faced Ibis at the Ridgefield NWR.  I recall the bird being there for several days–then it disappeared.  This is a juvenile. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1000, f8, ISO 1600, 1000mm (500 + 2x III) ... Continue Reading
