Scaup

This is a Feb. 22, 2020, shot of a Scaup, but I’m not sure if it’s a greater or lesser. My guess is that it is the lesser variety which is much more prevalent in North America than the greater. These 2 species can be very difficult to tell apart.  Taken at the Ridgef ... Continue Reading

Bufflehead Flapping

A Feb. 24, 2020, shot of a flapping female Bufflehead taken at the Ridgefield NWR.  Buffleheads were quite numerous as I spotted at least 3 females and 3 males in the same general area. They are somewhat skittish and tend to stay on the far side of the water. Hence, a heavy crop ... Continue Reading

Gettin’ out of Dodge

Feb. 2, 2020, at the Ridgefield NWR, came upon this coyote several hundred feet out in a field.  A seemingly small and scruffy coyote, it looked at me (sitting in my truck) and took off running.  It’s always fun to see these critters.  A lot more skittish now, coyotes wo ... Continue Reading

Launch of the Red-tailed Hawk

This beautiful Red-tailed Hawk had few white feathers except for a spot on the top of its wings. A sight to see as it launched from the tree branch. Used a 1.4x extender on the 500mm lens. Taken January 26, 2020, at the Ridgefield NWR in SW Washington State. Canon 5D Mark IV, 1/1 ... Continue Reading

Over The Shoulder

Most of the day at the refuge, Nov. 16, 2019, was dark from heavy overcast, and a little rain.  But this American Kestrel gave me an over the shoulder pose while perched on a tree over-hanging the road. Canon 5D Mark III, 1/1600, f4, ISO 500, 500mm, 2:15 p.m. Continue Reading
