On Jan. 7, 2016, at Ridgefield NWR, I came by a downed tree that had been laying there for years, covered with thick moss and at this moment, spots of melting snow/ice that would likely be completely melted in the next hour or so. I really wanted to capture a bird on this perch. In addition to seeing woodpeckers, creepers, nuthatches, and wrens while I waited here (but not landing on this perch), this Ruby-crowned Kinglet jumped up on the log for a blink of an eye. I was able to catch a couple of frames but I wished the bird had been looking more in the camera’s direction. Still, I like the wintry scene.
